Italy and USA: A Solid Relationship Despite Political Changes

Politics - July 25, 2024

A Relationship Independent of Politics

The relationship between Italy and the United States has always been characterized by a solid bond of friendship and collaboration, regardless of the political fluctuations within the two countries. This continuity was recently reiterated by the Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, and the Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, following the developments of the US electoral campaign. “It’s not up to us to get involved in the US election campaign,” Tajani said, underlining that Italy is a friend of the United States regardless of internal political vicissitudes. “We will work well with both Trump and Harris,” he added, highlighting Italy’s neutrality in the face of American political dynamics.

President Joe Biden’s choice to withdraw from the electoral race has sparked various reactions internationally. EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni praised Biden for his decision, calling it “a statesman’s decision, for the good of his country.” Similar praise came from Elisa Ferreira, a socialist member of the EU Cohesion Commission, who underlined that “the hallmark of leadership is knowing when to step aside.” These reactions highlight a recognition of Biden’s contributions to American politics and an appreciation for his ability to make difficult decisions for the common good.

Even in Italy, the reactions to Biden’s decision were varied. Giuseppe Conte, president of the M5S, described Biden’s withdrawal as “an act of responsibility,” while Peppe Provenzano, head of Foreign Affairs of the PD, called it a “courageous and wise” gesture. Provenzano also lauded the economic and social successes of the Biden administration, highlighting the benefits for American workers. On the other hand, the Italian right has expressed conflicting opinions. Matteo Salvini, deputy prime minister and leader of Lega party, invited his followers on social media to express their opinions on Kamala Harris, Biden’s candidate, calling Biden “the worst US president in history.” The League’s Claudio Borghi and Paolo Formentini also expressed criticism, with Formentini declaring that “the future of the United States is called Donald Trump.”

Italian reactions to US politics highlight a variety of opinions that reflect internal political divisions. However, one constant emerges: the importance of the relationship between Italy and the United States. Maurizio Lupi, president of Noi Moderati, said that the United States “is and will always be a strategic ally for Italy regardless of who leads the White House.” This statement highlights the importance of maintaining a stable and collaborative foreign policy, regardless of domestic political preferences. Pier Ferdinando Casini praised Biden for demonstrating that he is “a great American,” stressing that those who love politics serve their country. This view reflects an appreciation for dedication to public service and the ability to make difficult decisions in a complex context.

The debate over the political future of the United States also has global implications, especially in terms of climate policy. Angelo Bonelli of Avs expressed concerns about a possible return of Trump, saying that this “would be a disaster for the entire planet” given his opposition to climate policies. This perspective highlights the importance of the American elections not only for the United States, but also for the entire international community, especially when it comes to climate change.

In summary, Italy is preparing to maintain a strong and stable relationship with the United States regardless of the outcome of the American elections. While political opinions vary, awareness of the need for a solid alliance with the United States is unanimous. Biden’s decision to withdraw from the electoral race has sparked different reactions but has also highlighted the importance of leadership and political responsibility. In an increasingly interconnected world, the choices of global leaders have repercussions that go far beyond national borders, influencing international dynamics and common challenges, such as climate change.
