On Monday, October 17, Russia attacked Ukraine with kamikaze drones that fly at a speed of 185 kilometers per hour and have a range of about 2,000 kilometers. Small, fast and very difficult to detect. They are named in this way for their disposable feature. These are the so-called “Shahed 136”, Iranian-made drones. The striken areas are: Liev, Vinnytsia, Odessa, Zaporizhzhia and other cities in the country. The same day, the European Union has decided to further strengthen its role in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. How? Through the assistance and training of soldiers. Thus, after sending heavy weapons (tanks, ammunition, armored vehicles and artillery), the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union approved the European training mission aimed at 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers. The official name of the mission is EUMAM Ukraine. All the foreign ministers of the member countries met in Luxembourg and deliberated through an official note from the Council. “The mission’s objective – reads the note – is to help improve the military capacity of the Ukrainian armed forces to effectively conduct military operations”. In addition, the purpose of this action is also to give Ukraine the possibility of being able to defend its territorial integrity within its borders, the “internationally recognized” ones is underlined in the statement. In addition to defending the borders and improving the Ukrainian army, the European Union also motivates its choice through the protection of civilians and the defense of sovereignty.
How does EUMAM work?
Ukraine has long been asking for concrete military aid. EUMAM Ukraine will provide both individual and collective training to the Ukrainian armed forces. In addition, particular attention will also be paid to specialized training. Among those who will be trained there will also be the Territorial Defense Forces. Leading this mission will be Vice Admiral Hervé Bléjean, Director of Military Planning and Conduct Capability. EUMAM Ukraine will conduct its work in the territories of the EU member states. The operational headquarters will be located within EEAS, the European External Action Service, in Brussels. This is to be able to ensure general coordination at a strategic level. The expected costs are € 106,700,000. The mandate of the non-executive mission will last at least two years. It is important to underline that the mission will ensure coordination with Member States’ bilateral activities in support of Ukraine. The participation of other international partners and third States is also envisaged. The number of Ukrainian soldiers and soldiers who will be trained in Europe is 15,000.
The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, arriving at the council said that such a number will be able to support Ukraine over its direct self-defense.
Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Security Policy of the European Union, specified that Eumam is not just a training mission but it is a proof of the fact that the European Union will remain alongside Ukraine “to all the time necessary “. The White House is of the same opinion. Through spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre, during the meeting with journalists, the United States of America reiterated the same concept.
