Romania Enters Schengen After 20 Years of Waiting

Building a Conservative Europe - January 3, 2025

Well, well, well, look who’s finally made it to the Schengen party—Romania! After years of lingering at the doorstep, clutching its invitation and waiting for the bouncer’s nod, Romania has waltzed into the European Union’s border-free club as of January 1, 2025.

The Schengen Area is that exclusive European zone where internal borders are de facto nonexistent. It’s the VIP section of Europe, where you can glide from one country to another without flashing your passport like a tourist lost in translation.

Romania, along with its partner-in-waiting, Bulgaria were, since 2007, eyeing the Schengen velvet rope with a mix of hope and exasperation. The duo had their Schengen applications stamped “pending” more times than they could count, thanks to concerns over corruption, rule of law, and, let’s be honest, a dash of political drama.

But lo and behold, the tides have turned. After a series of diplomatic pirouettes and a gradual easing-in process that saw air and sea border checks lifted first, in March 2024, the final hurdle—the land border controls—have been dismantled. Austria, the last holdout with a veto tighter than a drum, finally unclenched its grip, allowing Romania and Bulgaria to finally get the full Schengen membership.

The celebrations were as grand as you’d expect for a country that’s been waiting in the wings for nearly two decades. Fireworks illuminated the sky, and in a move dripping with symbolism, the interior ministers of both nations gathered at the Friendship Bridge over the Danube River to ceremoniously raise the border barrier.

So, what does this mean for the average Romanian? Well, for starters, spontaneous road trips across Europe just got a whole lot easier. No more fumbling for passports at every checkpoint or enduring the steely gaze of border officials. It’s the ultimate fast pass to European travel.

Economically, this is a jackpot moment. Easier movement of goods and services means trade can flow like fine Romanian wine, boosting the economy and potentially attracting investment. Tourism is likely to see an uptick too, as travelers can now seamlessly include Romania in their European escapades without the hassle of border checks.

But let’s not get too carried away on this victory lap. The Schengen Area, while a symbol of unity and freedom, has its challenges. Recent years have seen some member countries reinstating border checks in response to migration pressures and security concerns. Romania will need to stay vigilant, ensuring it upholds the standards that come with Schengen membership.

Moreover, while the removal of border controls is a significant milestone, it’s not a magic wand that will instantly resolve all underlying issues. Romania still faces internal challenges, including political instability and economic disparities, which require attention beyond the Schengen accolade.

This victory also shines a spotlight on critical issues like drug trafficking and human trafficking. With border checks eliminated, traffickers may see opportunities to exploit the newly open routes, leveraging Romania’s position as a gateway between East and West Europe. The seamless transit of goods and people, while a hallmark of Schengen, could inadvertently aid criminal networks by reducing obstacles for illicit activities.

In the grand tapestry of European integration, Romania’s Schengen accession is surely a brightly colored thread, symbolizing progress and the relentless pursuit of unity. It’s a testament to the country’s resilience and determination to be recognized as an equal player on the European stage.

So, here’s to Romania—finally inside the Schengen club, sipping on the sweet taste of borderless freedom. May this new chapter be filled with opportunities, growth, and perhaps a touch less bureaucracy. After all, Romania has earned it, let’s see how it will use it.
