Why Young People Avoid Politics

It is an undeniable truth that the involvement of young people in politics is crucial for the development and sustainability of any democratic society. However, in recent times, there has been a concerning trend of young individuals actively avoiding political engagement. This phenomenon raises important questions about the underlying reasons behind their disinterest or aversion to politics. It is this author’s opinion that it is important for us as a society to understand at least some of the key factors contributing to why young people avoid politics and explore potential solutions to bridge this gap.

One of the primary reasons for young people’s disengagement from politics is a perceived disconnection from traditional political structures. Many young individuals believe that politicians are out of touch with their needs and concerns. They view politics as a realm dominated by older generations, with little representation or consideration for their unique perspectives. Consequently, this disillusionment leads to disinterest and a lack of motivation to participate.

The complexity and opaqueness of political systems can be overwhelming, especially for those who are new to the realm of politics.
